Film maker: greatcoatfilms, Virgin Media Shorts
Running time: 2:19
Synopsis: Pop is a funny short film about a man whose head keeps
turning into a balloon.
Representation:
- The man who played the doctor was costumed and had props to use to make him look like the stereotypical doctor: glasses, stethoscope, white shirt & tie. This is a representation of a doctor
The Doctor |
- The woman (the potential love interest) is represented as the typical girl stereotype: girly, looking for a potential partner - this is a stereotypical trait of femininity
Femenine woman |
Genre:
- Comedy
- Comedy due to impossible sernario with dry, serious humour
- The name “POP” can also suggest this genre, as that sort of onomatopoetic word would usually be associated with something light-hearted, rather than serious, romantic etc.
Audience:
- Young adults
- Comedy film enthusiasts
Narrative:
- POP’s narrative is circular. It starts off in the doctors
surgery, and ends here too.

LOVE..HURTS!
Film maker: munitizio, Virgin Media Shorts
Running time: 2:17
Synopsis: A cute short film about childhood love.
Representation:
- There are only two characters in this short film, one being a young male child and the other a young female child. Initially, they are both represented in the stereotypical way – the boy being loud and playing boisterous games, and the girl playing delicately and being cute
- However, these roles are then reversed, and the boy is being cute and trying to impress the girl, whereas the girl is mean and boisterous.
- This is a nice twist as it gives a more realistic view on childhood.
Genre:
- In my opinion this short film is a hybrid
- Comedic elements, however it is about love and playing with the idea of childhood sweethearts, so I’d say it’s a romantic comedy.
- Referring to Rick Altman’s theory of genre, this short uses both syntactic and semantic elements to build this genre. Some syntactic elements are the daisy decorated fire engine and the kiss. From these examples, the syntactic elements would be things like the little boy giving the fire engine to the girl as a gift to impress her, and the little girl rewarding the boy with a kiss in the end. This gives us the idea that the genre is a romantic comedy.
Audience:
- Young children
- Families
- Older people
- This is derived from the fact that they are experiences most people have gone through/witnessed in their lives
Narrative:
- Can be compared to the narrative theory of Levi-Strauss.
- His theory involved the use of binary oppositions.
- In the short, these are used a lot – e.g. the little boy is good, the girl is bad, he is loud, she is quiet, etc.
ROCKET
Film maker: jsheridan
Running time: 2:08
Synopsis: A small dog that builds a rocket
http://www.virginmediashorts.co.uk/film/2754/rocket
Representation:
- The only character in the film is a dog, and it is not represented in the typical way for a dog
- It's represented as being exceptionally clever and able to build a rocket
Genre:
- The genre I'd suggest for this short would be adventure
- This is because it is about the journey of this dog as he builds and eventually flys a rocket - it's fantasty and an adventure
Building the rocket (above)
Flying the rocket (below)
Audience:
- Animal lovers
- People who like adventure films
- Children
- Families
- This is derived from the fact that it is a very cute, family friendly short film
- Todorov's theory can be applied to this short film
- It has a begining - the original state, an equilibrium - the building of the rocket, and an ending - where he flies away in the rocket
ON HOLD
Film maker: otaylor
Running time: 2:20
Synopsis: "An every day phonecall to the bank..look familiar?"
http://www.virginmediashorts.co.uk/film/3606/on-hold
Representation:
- Represents banks phonelines as lengthy and boring
- He is represented as a stereotypical young male - messy room, lounging idley on the bed, playing on the xbox etc.
Genre:
- The genre for this short would be comedy
- This is because it takes a real life problem that most people experience, and represents it in a funny way
Audience:
- Young adults
- Adults
- People who have experienced long periods of time being on hold for helplines
- This is because you would have to understand the situation and have been in it yourself/know someone whos been in it to really understand the funny side
On hold
Narrative:
- Todorov's theory can be applied to this short film
- It has a begining - the dialing of the phone, an equilibrium - the being on hold, and an ending - where he finally gets through to the helpline and then gets cut off
- This makes the audience follow the story with more ease
The begining
Some of your comments and application of theory are a little limited. You may wish to go back and improve some of these. Think about some of the theory we did at the start of the year.
